Correction of single‐beam sample absorption error in a hemispherical 45°/0° spectrophotometer measurement cavity

A mathematical model for quantifying single‐beam sample absorption error in a hemispherical 45°/0° measurement cavity is derived and tested by measuring diffuse reflectance standards with a prototype visible‐range spectrophotometer. A methodology is described for using this three‐parameter model to correct for sample absorption error in any single‐beam spectrophotometer. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Noble Metal Nanocrystal‐Incorporated Fullerene‐Like Polyoxometalate Based Microspheres

Monodisperse fullerene‐like polyoxometalate‐based microspheres are synthesized using a single‐phase approach which is quick, easier to control surfactant to polyoxometalate (POM) molar ratios and result in better control over the size‐distribution range. Noble‐metal nanocrystals are successfully incorporated in the surfactant encapsulated complex multilayered spherical assemblies without any change in their layered morphology. Combining the merits of fullerene‐like POMs and monodisperse noble metal nanocrystals, these monodisperse hybrid spheres show interesting composition‐ and size‐dependent photochemical properties.     

Confinement of gold quantum dot arrays inside ordered mesoporous silica thin film

Periodic disposed quantum dot arrays are very useful for the large scale integration of single electron devices. Gold quantum dot arrays were self-assembled inside pore channels of ordered amino-functionalized mesoporous silica thin films, employing the neutralization reaction between chloroauric acid and amino groups. The diameters of quantum dots are controlled via changing the aperture of pore channels from 2.3 to 8.3 nm, which are characterized by HRTEM, SEM and FT-IR. UV-vis absorption spectra of gold nanoparticle/mesoporous silica composite thin films exhibit a blue shift and intensity drop of the absorption peak as the aperture of mesopores decreases,which represents the energy level change of quantum dot arrays due to the quantum size effect.
